On 5 March 2022, China MEE has released the amendments to the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) for PFHxS, its salts and PFHxS-related compounds for public consultation. Later in June 2022, the 10th meeting on Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) will be convened to discuss the amendments. Once the amendments passed the deliberation, PFHxS, its salts and PFHxS-related compounds may be listed in Annex A to the Convention, in which substances are prohibited from manufacturing, use and import/export, and there is no exemption.
The Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (Convention) was concluded in 2001 to protect human health and the environment from persistent organic pollutants and it took effective in China on 11 Nov. 2004. According to the requirements of the Convention, parties to the convention shall:
- Prohibit and/or eliminate the production and use, as well as the import and export, of the intentionally produced POPs that are listed in Annex A to the Convention;
- Restrict the production and use, as well as the import and export, of the intentionally produced POPs that are listed in Annex B to the Convention;
- Reduce or eliminate releases from unintentionally produced POPs that are listed in Annex C to the Convention;
Initially, the Convention contained 12 substances. After years of addition, there are 30 pops listed in the annexes to the Convention now.
An indicative list of PFHxS, its salts and PFHxS-related compounds will be also prepared to facilitate the identification of substances.
