Statistics of new food additives applications accepted in recent 5 years
From 2018 to 2022, a total of 326 new food additives (including expanded use) applications were accepted by the National Health Commission of the People's Republic of China (NHC). Since the acceptance code all begin with "卫食添新申字", there is no distinction between domestic and imported products. The statistics of the number of declarations accepted in specific years are shown in Figure 1.
Statistics of new food additives released for public comments in the last five years
From 2018 to 2022, a total of 183 new food additives passed the technical review of the China National Center for Food Safety Risk Assessment (CFSA) and were issued for public comments. The statistics of the number of public comments released in specific years are shown in Figure 2. Among them:
- There are 91 new varieties: including 22 new nutrition enhancers, five new food flavors, two new food processing aids, 57 new enzymes, and five new food additives; and
- There are 92 additives with expanded use: including 11 nutrition enhancers, 13 processing aids, and 68 food additives.
Statistics of approved new food additives in the last five years
From 2018 to 2022, a total of 145 new food additives were approved by the NHC. The statistics on the number of approvals in specific years are shown in Figure 3. Among them:
- There are 64 new varieties: including four new nutrition enhancers, five new food flavors, two new food processing aids, 50 new enzymes, and three new food additives; and
- There are 81 additives with expanded use: including six nutrition enhancers, ten processing aids, and 65 food additives.
