On August 14, 2024, the China National Center for Food Safety Risk Assessment (CFSA) issued a call for public comment on four new food additives: one new food additive, one new food nutrition enhancer, and two food additives with expanded scope.
Comments are welcome until September 14, 2024. The details are as follows:
New food additive (one type)
Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT)
The scope of use and use levels of Butylated hydroxytoluene shall comply with the provisions of GB 2760 - National Food Safety Standard for the Use of Food Additives.
This specification applies to the food additive Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT), produced from m-cresol and isobutylene through an alkylation reaction using acidic catalysts (such as concentrated sulfuric acid, sodium p-toluenesulfonate, and sodium benzenesulfonate), followed by distillation and recrystallization. All other aspects shall comply with the provisions of GB 1900 - National Food Safety Standard for the Food Additive Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT).
New food nutrition enhancer (one type)
2’-fucosyllactose, 2’-FL
The scope of use, use levels, and specifications for 2’-FL shall comply with Announcement No. 8 of 2023 by the National Health Commission (NHC), excluding Appendix C - Information on the production strain for producing 2’-fucosyllactose). The details of the production strain are as follows:
Table 1 Information on the production strain for producing 2’-fucosyllactose
Nutrition enhancer | Source | Donor |
2’-fucosyllactose | Escherichia coli BL21 (DE3) | Helicobacter spp.a |
Escherichia coli W | Helicobacter spp.a |
a is the donor for α-1,2-fucosyltransferase
Food additives with expanded scope (two types)
S.N. | Food additive | Food category number | Food category/ name | Maximum level (g/kg) | Note |
1 | Curdlan | 01.05.03 | Formulated cream | Appropriate level
16.05 | Microbial preparations for food processing (excluding 16.04) | Appropriate level
2 | Enzymatically produced steviol glycosides | The scope of use and use levels shall comply with the provisions for approved steviol glycosides as specified in GB 2760-2024 - National Food Safety Standard for the Use of Food Additives. It can be used alone or in combination with steviol glycosides. | Expressed as steviol equivalents |
