China’s CFSA Releases the Safety Assessment Application Requirements for GMMs in Food Processing

On September 13, 2024, the China National Center for Food Safety Risk Assessment (CFSA) released the Requirements for Safety Assessment Application Materials for Genetically Modified Microorganisms Used in Food Processing (Trial). This signifies that new products produced using genetically engineered microorganisms are no longer limited to the “food additive” category. Instead, the application pathway has fully opened for “three new foods,” including new food ingredients, new food additives, and new food-related products.

The CFSA is responsible for the technical review of “three new foods.” In accordance with the relevant requirements of the National Health Commission (NHC) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs (MARA), applicants should submit the relevant materials for products involving genetically modified microorganisms (GMMs) that meet the application conditions for “three new food categories.” These materials should be submitted as part of the production process section in the application documents for new food raw materials and new food-related products, and as part of the production process section in the safety evaluation documents for new food additives.
